Lawsuit filed after carrot blamed for poisoning
At least one lawsuit has been filed after 45 people suffered food poisoning while taking flights out of Hawaii – and carrots may be to blame.
The vegetable served by Gate Gourmet Inc. was named as the likely source, according to wire service reports.
The outbreak follows a warning issued to the company by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that cited “live cockroaches, flies, and mold growing on the windows of a refrigerator.” The report also cited a “pink slimy substance” dripping onto the conveyor of a pot washing machine.
Gate Gourmet provides meals for Northwest, Delta, United, Hawaiian and Aloha airlines.
A spokesman said practices has changed and new training given to staff after the warning.
An investigation into the Hawaii outbreak by the FDA named carrots in salads as the most probable source of the 45 cases of illness.
