London City Airport’s bid to extend flight operation hours has been denied.

It wanted to extend flying hours on Saturdays.

A Newham Council committee unanimously voted against the proposal.

The ‘weekend respite’ rule limits Saturday flights to no later than 1:00pm.

This has been in effect for 25 years.

The airport wanted to extend it to 6:30pm.

The proposal attracted a lot of opposition with about 1,600 residents in east London objecting.

Eight other local authorities across London also raised concerns about noise.

These included Lewisham, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Southwark and Greenwich.

The rule also bans Sunday morning flights.

Sarah Ruiz, a Custom House Councillor said: “24 hours of quiet time is not a lot to ask for those residents whose lives have been blighted.”

Newham officers said the commercial benefits of extended flying hours were ‘insufficient to outweigh or mitigate the substantial harm.’
