Long-haul survey shows where the pound goes further

Tokyo has emerged as the cheapest of 30 long-haul destinations for holiday essentials, according to a Post Office report.

The Japanese capital has seen prices fall considerably in the last four years, pushing it from 27th place to top position.

Based on prices researched by Travelbag and cross-referenced with those provided by tourist offices, a ‘basket’ of 10 tourist items, including meals and drinks, costs just £48.90 in Tokyo.

This means the Japanese capital is 24% cheaper than runner-up Cape Town (£64.50), where prices have been influenced by the South African rand.

The research found that despite the weak pound, prices have fallen for UK visitors in 40% cent of the 30 destinations.

Six of the 10 best value destinations are cheaper this year, according to the Post Office barometer of costs.

Aside from Tokyo and third-placed Mombasa Beach, Kenya (down 1% to £68.59), the remainder are all new entrants to the top 10.

With a 9% fall in costs, Hoi An in Vietnam (£76.74) is the highest placed of these, overtaking Bali (sixth place, £76.95) for the first time to take fifth position.

Costa Rica has risen from 12th to seventh place, thanks to an 8% fall in costs in Tamarindo to £79.94.

Prices have also fallen 7% in Penang, Malaysia (£81.77) and 6% in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic (£85.34), helping these destinations move into ninth and 10th places respectively.

Despite a 7% rise in prices in Colombo, Sri Lanka retains its number four position and Orlando stays at number eight.
