Man killed in Jamaica robbery

Five British tourists and one Canadian have been robbed by a gang of machete-wielding men, who also killed a gardener during the raid.

According to the Jamaica Observer newspaper, the attack took place in the resort town of Negril, at the Falcon Cottages resort. Four men have now been arrested in relation to the attack, which took place on Thursday afternoon but has not been extensively reported in the UK press.

The Jamaica Observer reports that the group lost some USD50,000 worth of cash and jewellery in the attacks. The gardener was shot in the chest and had his neck slashed by the gang.

The island’s tourism director reportedly told the newspaper that the tourists would all be completing their holidays on the island. He added: “Like everyone else we, in tourism, would like the crime situation to be dealt with because it is not good for tourism. Yes, it hurts tourism but the fact of the matter is that we need to do something to solve crime period.”

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office this morning told News From Abroad that consular staff had been in contact with the British travellers involved, and that none of them had been injured in the incident.
