Melbourne wins major convention bid
Melbourne has won a bid to host a major global science convention to be held in 2010.
The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) Conference is the sixth major international meeting confirmed for Melbourne’s new convention centre.
Delegates to the conference will spend more than $4 million during their stay in Melbourne with total economic benefit to Victoria estimated at $8.6 million.
“This is the world’s major global convention for biochemists and molecular biologists and will bring 1600 scientists to town,” Victorian Tourism Minister John Pandazopoulos said.
“Hosting this conference will allow Australia to showcase its scientific credentials to the world.”
The convention centre, which will integrate with the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and will be operational in 2009, has already secured almost $80 million of international business for Victoria
