MH370 investigators to begin examination of plane wing
Experts will begin their examination later today of a wing that is believed to have broken off missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 when it crashed into the Indian Ocean.
The part from a Boeing 777 was found washed up on the island of Reunion, more than 2,000 miles from the area of the Indian Ocean where teams have been concentrating their search for the missing aircraft.
It has been taken to Toulouse in southwest France where this afternoon experts will try to determine if it came from MH370 and, if so, if it gives any clues as to how the aircraft came down.
Crucially, they might be able to determine the speed at which the aircraft hit the water, which will enable them to tell search teams whether it disintegrated on impact or if it remains largely intact.
An Australian transport expert is helping out in the examination at the invitation of the French authorities. Malaysian experts are also attending along with a delegation from China, home to many of the 239 people onboard MH370.
