Minister: work longer hours to solve airport chaos
Business minister Paul Scully reckons he has simple solution to the airport chaos – work longer hours.
The minister called on airport staff to work longer ‘that want to.’
“We want to work really closely with the airports and the airlines to make sure that they are doing everything they can and see what more we can do,” Scully told Sky News.
“I’m not talking about going out forcing people to, but make sure that they’re matched up properly and those people who can work longer — that want to work longer — can do.”
He is not advocating for scrapping current duty practices for safety critical workers like flight crew.
Nearly all airlines are suffering acute staff shortages and Gatwick Airport said it will reduce flights to minimise disruption.
The aviation industry cut thousands of jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic.
There have warnings the misery of mass cancellations will linger through the summer.
