More jobs to go in tourism
Nearly half of tourism businesses have cut staff in recent months, and managers in the industry say job cuts will continue.
This is according to a recent survey that found 40% of tourism businesses questioned said they had cut staff in the last six months. An additional 25% intended to make further cuts in the next six months.
The survey was carried out by recruitment consultants, TMP/Hudson Global Resources. The company questioned a small, but representative sample of 100 human resources and operational managers from tourism businesses around the UK.
Despite a shortage of jobs, Hudson head of tourism and leisure, Richard Baker says staff retention could be a problem, as remaining staff are put under more pressure when their colleagues leave. He said: “Tourism and leisure firms should be thinking very carefully about how they are going to retain key staff, develop their skills and recruit additional employees when required.”
Hudson also found that despite an abundance of candidates, 30% of managers surveyed complained that staff in the industry lacked skills. Worryingly, only 13% of managers had any long-term strategy in place to tackle skills shortages.
