Mother presumed drowned in boating accident
Peru: Woman disappeared after rescuing her three children from river
A British mother is missing, feared drowned, after she rescued her three children from a river on an adventure holiday in Peru.
The woman and her three children are reported to have been thrown from their inflatable canoe into the Vilcanota river, and though she managed to pull the three children from the river, she was swept away. Rescue teams have been searching but say they hold little hope of finding the woman alive.
The family, who live in Austria, were on an adventure holiday driving from Canada to Chile in their Volkswagen camper van. The river is normally very calm but has been swollen by recent summer rains.
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has confirmed that it is aware of the incident and that the British Embassy in Lima is expecting to have more information on the incident soon.
