Myanmar violence condemned by authorities
Tensions remain high in many parts of Myanmar following religious violence between Buddhists and Muslims in which 32 people died in Mandalay region, and nearly 10,000 were left hopeless.
The riots occurred after an argument at a gold shop in Meikhtila between its Muslim owner and Buddhist customers.
Yangon Region has doubled the number of security officers in some neighbourhoods following rumours of imminent violence, an official from the Yangon Region police force said.
The official urged residents to avoid forming groups in the streets
"People fear that when they see crowds something might happen. We are also worried about that. We are keeping a close eye on the situation," said the officer.
Zaw Htay, director of the President’s Office, used his Facebook page to call for calm. In a status update he said unidentified people were trying to undermine peace and cause riots.
"Don’t be fooled by these rumours," he said, advising people to seek accurate information from authorities.
