New routes, profits for US airlines

A US airline reported a profit and another carrier added flights, two positive recent developments in an ailing industry that has been reeling with bad news.

Delta’s new Atlanta flights to Nice and Budapest moved it closer to its goal of offering more worldwide destinations than any other US carrier.

Both flights involving Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with capacities of 204 passengers will make it easier for visitors from the US to have direct access to Central Europe, said Delta.

At the same time, US Airways Group reported a first-quarter profit of $64 million compared to a profit of $28 million for America West in the first quarter of this year.

“Even after accounting for merger-related expenses and continued high fuel costs,” the combined US Airways-America West are expecting to make a profit this year, company officials said.

In the first quarter of last year, the two airlines had losses of $15 million (America West) and $257 million (US).

“While we recognize we are early in the integration process and we have much work yet to do, these results highlight the tremendous value we have achieved through the merger,” said Doug Parker, CEO of US Airways.
