New tours of historic French Lick Springs
As restoration and construction at the French Lick Springs Resort Casino nears completion, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana is gearing up to conduct daily tours of the historic property through Historic Landmarks Foundation.
Tours will cover the resorts past as well as its restoration, from the bowling lanes on the lower level to the Governors Suite. Site of a hotel since 1845, French Lick attracted guests with promises of rejuvenation and improved health from mineral springs treatments.
The present structure, built in 1901, became a destination for the wealthy and famous. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Diamond Jim Brady, Groucho Marx, Lana Turner, and Bing Crosby were guests, along with a host of other Hollywood stars. The infamous visited too, including John Dillinger. The resorts architecture and golf course have been restored to their early 20th grandeur as well.
The hotel at French Lick Springs, closed for restoration since November 2005, reopens Friday, Nov. 3, with a new casino. Historic Landmarks Foundation’s tours at the nearby West Baden Springs Hotel will be limited by heavy construction now underway to install guest rooms. The West Baden Springs Hotel will open to overnight guests in May 2007 for the first time since 1932.
Both historic hotels are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and West Baden Springs claims the rarified status of National Historic Landmark. The guided tours offered by Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, like those offered at the famous Hotel Del Coronado in California and the Grand Hotel on Michigans Mackinac Island, will highlight architecture, history and myth, with entertaining stories befitting the landmarks’ colorful pasts.
Reservations are not required for either tour. For more information, visit www.historiclandmarks.org
