New Zealand hit by earthquake aftershocks
A series of violent aftershocks to last February’s earthquake in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, has left at least six people seriously injured and caused power outages and flooding.
About 10 people are believed to have been hit by material falling from already damaged buildings in the South island city, according to the Telegraph. Two people were tapped in St John’s Church in Latimer Square.
The largest tremor measured 6.0 on the Richter scale and was the biggest to hit Christchurch since the 6.3 earthquake on February 22, which caused 181 deaths.
It came only shortly after a 5.5 tremor, striking in the early afternoon when the city was busy with workers and shoppers.
Loose boulders on cliffs were threatening homes and roads in some seaside suburbs of the city.
