Online reviews fail a test
Can the ever-growing number of online hotel-restaurant reviews be believed? Perhaps not, CBS4 Boston reported.
TripAdvisor is among companies trying to weed out fake reviews.
“We actually have a PhD on staff who has looked at every single bit and bite and he’s come up with a way of detecting what might be fraudulent reviews,” said spokesperson Christine Petersen.
CBS4 sent a fake review to TripAdvisor and Citysearch. It had exaggerated comments that hotels with five years.
“It sailed through both sites” undetected, the station said.
“TripAdvisor’s said the posting was too similar to others to be flagged,” despite the company’s watchdog.
The station cited other individuals who complained about reviews that said, for example, a hotel was within walking distance of a beach when the facility was several miles away.
