Private island resort Lagen Island is all set to reopen later this year following an extensive renovation.
Located in El Nido, Palawan, in the Philippines, Lagen Island is surrounded by tropical forest and a blue lagoon.
The hotel first opened in 1998 but will reappear with a very new look.
Closed for a comprehensive refurbishment last summer, it is expected to reopen in the third quarter of 2025.
The transformation will see a new spa known as The Nest.‘ Previously, Lagen Island had just one couple-room for treatments and massages, but as part of the renovation it’ll now provide a dedicated spa and wellness space where guests can nurture their mental and physical wellbeing. The spa will be split across two levels with a Spa Garden and Reflection Pond, a gym, yoga studio, relaxation lounge, watsu pool, hot and cold plunge pools, a steam room and a sauna. The three treatment rooms will each have two beds, a bath tub, and a private bathroom.
Fewer rooms, but more island: Going against the grain of what you’d expect from an extensive hotel renovation, Lagen Island is downsizing its room count. To gain more of a beach and to reclaim more of the natural island, El Nido Resorts have removed eight of the guest rooms – there will now be 42 instead of 50. The swimming pool has also been moved to allow for the beach to have more of a spotlight.
A new Dive Centre will be inspired by Palawan’s nipa huts – a traditional, indigenous, stilt-style house.
Marine & Biodiversity Discovery Centre: This will be an interactive space where guests can learn about the ecosystems that exist on Lagen Island and across the Philippines.
The island resort’s overall design will champion native and tribal aesthetics and will fuse the traditions of Palawan and local craftmanship with Filipino luxury.
Lagen Island will continue a deep commitment to preservation, from protecting fragile marine ecosystems to minimising environmental impact.
El Nido Resorts has its own dedicated sustainability team to ensure that the resort is for people and planet first and foremost, it says.
