Paris to tighten security for tourists
Police in Paris have announced moves to further tighten security for tourists this summer, including the creation of a 25-man field patrol unit for the Champs-Elysees and "increased vigilance" around the Gare du Nord, the train terminal for the Eurostar.
It said that "real progress" had been made in enhancing the safety of tourists and employees in the city’s tourism sector since an action plan for Paris’ tourist zones was launched last year.
Initially, attention was focused on popular spots around the Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe, Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower and the Sacre-Coeur.
The plan will be extended this year to the Boulevard Saint-Germain, the lower Latin Quarter and Place du Chatelet.
A local unit will be dedicated to tackling anti-social behaviour and co-ordinated patrols, organsied by the police and Paris City Halls’ Prevention and Protection Department, will work in parks and gardens popular with tourists.
