A passenger is facing a prison sentence after he phoned a police station falsely claiming a bomb was about to go off at an airport because he was running late for his flight.

The 46-year-old Italian, who was due to fly to Rome on a business trip, allegedly claimed a bomb had been planted at Turin Airport.

He claimed he had overheard two men, speaking Arabic, discussing the attack, according to Italian newspaper La Stampa.

An Alitalia plane was evacuated and all passengers’ bags were searched as a result of the hoax which delayed the flight by more than two hours on Thursday said the report.

Police investigating the incident said the man could face a prison sentence, a fine and he might be banned from flying.
