Passenger sets fire to cabin mid-flight

A passenger had to be restrained by flight crew and fellow travellers after setting off a fire on board a plane, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said.

It is the latest in a spate of dangerous air rage incidents to hit China aviation, which in recent months has included passengers attempting to open emergency exits and physical and verbal assaults of flight crew.

Chinese state media said the Shenzhen Airlines pilot requested an emergency landing at Guangzhou and evacuation slides were deployed for 95 passengers.

Two passengers were treated for injuries, reports said.

The Civil Aviation Administration gave no further details but an investigation surrounding the incident is underway.

Flight ZH 9648 had originated in Taizhou City which appears to have suffered a security lapse, as witnesses were quoted as seeing the passenger using a cigarette lighter and petrol to start the fire.
