Friday, 09 May, 2013 0

Prince Harry will be attending the 2013 Warrior Games, which run from 11-16 May in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The organisers have announced this week that the prince will be attending the opening ceremony, volleyball competition and cycling competition at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

About 260 wounded, ill and injured service members will compete at the fourth annual Warrior Games. The five US armed forces teams, joined by a Great Britain squad, compete in a range of sports including: volleyball; cycling; shooting and wheelchair basketball. Prince Harry’s attendance will have a ‘strong central theme of supporting injured servicemen and women from both the UK and US armed forces, ‘ a March press release announcing his initial plans noted.

Colorado Springs has hosted the games since their inception at the US Olympic Training Center and U.S. Air Force Academy in the city. As well as hosting the Warrior Games, the U.S. Olympic Training Complex is the flagship training venue for the U.S. Olympic Committee and has hosted world class athletes such as Michael Phelps.  The U.S. Air Force Academy has 4,000 cadets in training at its campus and is one of the largest tourist attractions in Colorado Springs, attracting more than a million visitors every year.

Overlooked by the stunning Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs has long been an area noted for its natural beauty and attraction for international visitors. Located only an hour south of Denver, the city is home to the famous Garden of the Gods state park and Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
