Problems with Ryanair movie initiative
Ryanair has reportedly admitted that plans to sell customers in-flight movies and cartoons have not been the success they were expected to be. As reported by News From Abroad, the carrier’s chief executive Michael O’Leary predicted that the scheme would generate “enormous sums of money”. But now, according to The Guardian, Ryanair is planning to drop the price of the service from seven euros to five euros – and if that does not encourage a better take-up, it will scrap the initiative. Deputy chief executive Howard Millar is quoted as saying: “Initial trials haven’t been as good as we like.” The newspaper reports the director as adding that a lack of foreign-language films was partly to blame, and that there had been a lack of demand for cartoons because fewer children travel during the winter months. The Guardian states that other no-frills carriers have been watching the move carefully and that EasyJet is planning to carry out a similar trial later this year.
