Qantas, Virgin on track to post worst ever on-time performances

On-time performance for Australia’s big two airlines is set to be their worst ever

Both Qantas and Virgin are coping will acute staff shortages which continue to cause disruption at airports around the country.

Over half of Qantas and Virgin customers experienced flight delays or cancellations last week.

Only 43% of Virgin flights left on time, while Qantas was only marginally better at 44% on-time

“We had additional crew on standby and used larger aircraft on some flights, which allowed us to better respond to these issues and get 85% of our domestic flights to depart within an hour of schedule,” a Qantas spokesperson said.

In addition, Airservices Australia said 10% of its air traffic control crew had been absent over the last week, further impacting operations.

Qantas let go 9,000 employees due to the Covid-19 travel bans and lockdowns, and Virgin cut 3,000 jobs.

According to Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport Research, and Economics data, Qantas’ on-time rate for May was 60.7%.
