Registered Traveler slow going but LAX shows shorter lines

Friday, 27 Jun, 2006 0

The government-mandated Registered Travelers program is slow to take hold and remains controversial, but at least one major airport, Los Angeles International, has eased its long lines.

The Registered Traveler program has so far been implemented only in Orlando, Florida, though the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) hopes to have up to 20 US airports with the expedited search service.

The Air Transport Association has opposed the plan.  “The program will unnecessarily drain limited TSA resources and detract from the agency’s ability to craft more comprehensive programs benefiting all travelers,” said Air Transport president James C. May.

A reporter from the Los Angeles Times checking the lines there found improvements over “security lines that stretched outside terminals to the sidewalk” that have been a common sight since 9-11.

“Travelers should always expect to wait in line at check-in counters, curbside baggage and even security checkpoints. But the chronic problem of TSA line snaking out onto the sidewalk may someday soon be a thing of the past,” he wrote.
