Ride in Marshall Tito’s train

Visitors to Serbia are reportedly being offered rides on the personal train of former leader Marshall Tito, in which such world leaders as Leonid Brezhnev and Jawaharlal Nehru were entertained. The BBC reports that the Blue Train, which was last used 24 years ago, still has all the original 1950s fixtures and fittings, including luxurious suites and sleeping cars. It was reportedly hailed as one of the most luxurious trains in the world when it was built in 1947. The train was used to carry the body of Jospi Broz Tito across Yugoslavia to Belgrade following his death in 1980. According to the BBC, the Serbian Rail Company now wants the train to pay its way and, from 31 January, tourists will be able to travel from Belgrade to Vrnjacka Banja, central Serbia. Vesna Vukasovic, of the Belgrade Rail Company, is quoted as saying: “Many people would like to go back to those times a little, for nostalgic reasons. And there is a chance to see a train that was closed to the public during a period of our history, to see how things were then.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad Ltd
