Rugby hotels take a punt
Australia: Room rates increased massively as World Cup approaches
British travellers heading Down Under for the Rugby World Cup later this year could face massive increases in hotel prices, according to a report in The Times.
The newspaper reports that some hotels in Sydney are doubling their room rates during the competition, which will start on 10 October and finish on 22 November, while others are enforcing 10-day minimum stays and adding extra surcharges for stays that coincide with matches.
One example quoted by the newspaper is the Observatory Hotel, in The Rocks, one of Sydney’s plushest districts, which has increased its night-rate by £116 to £260 – and has also imposed a minimum stay of 10 nights. Two hotels in the city run by Accor are adding a £155 supplement for match days.
A spokesman for Accor told The Times that its prices are “still cheaper than most London, Paris and New York hotels and we are hosting one of the world’s premier sporting events”.
