Saga cruise ship returns to UK with 100 passengers injured during storm
A Saga cruise ship has docked back in the UK with a reported 100 people injured.
They were injured as the ship sailed through a storm off the French coast.
None of the injuries are thought to be serious.
Saga said only five people needed medical treatment.
The Spirit of Discovery initially cancelled its last call in Las Palmas with news of an imminent storm.
It planned to shelter in north-west Spain but the port was closed so the captain decided to head back to the UK in the hope of staying ahead of the storm.
It wasn’t to be.
It was caught up in the storm in the Bay of Biscay and veered suddenly before coming to a stop.
This is a safety maneuver used in bad weather and was the cause of the injuries.
It then saw out the storm before sailing back to Portsmouth.
“While the weather is clearly beyond our control, we want to offer our sincere apologies to all those affected,” Saga said.
