San Miguel de Allende takes first steps to reopening
Mexican historic city San Miguel de Allende is slowly awakening from its Covid-19 hibernation.
It started Phase 0 of its ‘reactivation’ with local businesses opening such as shopping malls, markets, offices and public transportation.
Restaurants also started to reopen and are permitted to serve at 50% capacity.
However hotels and tourist facilities will remain closed for now.
"We still haven’t opened the doors to our visitors. San Miguel is not opening to tourism yet," said San Miguel de Allende mayor Luis Alberto Villarreal Garcia.
All residents are asked to wear face masks, and practice social distancing.
San Miguel de Allende’s City Council issued a directive that accommodation providers are not permitted to market their services online yet..
However hotels may be included in the next Phase 1 step.
Hotels will be required to get a ‘Health First’ certification ensuring they meet all the requirements for reopening.
The certificate is also mandatory for golf courses, activity centers and cultural spaces.
"If we do it right in this first stage, we will be able to open other businesses gradually," Villarreal Garcia said.
