Security shutdown for climate change summit affects travel

Security in Paris for the climate change summit has led to road closures affecting airports and cross channel ferry travellers.

The Foreign Office issued a warning that major roads, including those going to Paris airport, would be closed yesterday from 4pm to 10pm and all-day today, from 6am to 9pm.

Motorways and key roads near the Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports are closed to all but official traffic, as are main routes from central areas to Le Bourget conference centre.

2,800 police and soldiers are guarding the ‘hermetically sealed’ venue near Le Bourget airport, north of Paris.

P&O Ferries told customers that the A16 and A1 motorways outside Paris would also be closed on both days due to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change.

The French authorities are effectively asking people to stay at home, and to not use public transport ‘except in case of necessity’.

Hundreds of masked protestors were arrested in Paris yesterday after demonstrations ahead of the summit.

Protests have been banned following the terrorist attacks but around 500 turned up in the Place de la Republique anyway and started throwing bottles and stones at police.

The police responded with tear gas and baton charges arresting 208 by late evening.

Pairs of shoes have been symbolically placed on the Place de la Republique, after the planned climate march was cancelled due to France still being under a state of emergency.

Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince Charles were among those due in arrive in Paris for the summit, as well as US President Barack Obama, China’s Xi Jinping, India’s Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
