September : a bunch of new intercontinental air routes to Asia
Carriers from Europe, the Middle East and the United States are deepening their Asian footprints this month, with new long-haul routes opening across the continent. While Chinese carriers continue to expand into Europe.
Europe to Asia will consequently see the largest number of new routes this September.
KLM expanded its India presence on September 2. The Dutch flag carrier opened its fourth Indian destination by adding Hyderabad to its network. The Amsterdam–Hyderabad service runs three times weekly with Boeing 777-200ERs. KLM also flies to Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi.
SAS Scandinavian Airlines will make its debut in South Korea on September 12, launching nonstop service from Copenhagen to Seoul. The route, operated four times weekly with Airbus A350-900s, will scale back to three weekly frequencies during the winter. The move comes after SAS joined SkyTeam, as the Scandinavian carrier aligns with partner Korean Air to strengthen connectivity between Northern Europe and Asia.
Chinese carriers continue to gain market shares in Europe as they leverage on shorter flight paths through Russian airspace. On September 26, China Eastern Airlines will begin nonstop flights from Shanghai Pudong to Barcelona, operating four times weekly with Airbus A350-900s. The launch follows new services this year to Paris, Milan, Copenhagen, Geneva and Istanbul.
To be mentioned also is the launch of two weekly flights from China Southern Airlines from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Wuhan.
Gulf carriers built their presence in both Europe and Asia
Airlines in the Middle East are also adding flights to both Europe and the Far East this september. UAE national carrier Etihad Airways is launching daily flights to Taipei on September 7 with Boeing 787-9s, marking its entry into Taiwan. On September 29, Etihad will add 5 weekly frequencies to Peshawar (Pakistan), expanding its South Asian reach. The Abu Dhabi carrier is preparing to land at Phnom Penh new Techo International Airport on October 3.
Meanwhile, FlyDubai will start flying twice a week to Chisinau in Moldova from Dubai, providing easy connections to Emirates network to Asia; On Sept. 29, the airline will also start two weekly frequencies to Iasi in Romania.
From the US West Coast, Hawaiian Airlines will extend Seattle’s long-haul network with a new link to Seoul Incheon, also beginning Sept. 12. Hawaiian’s A330-200s will operate the route five times a week. The service is part of Alaska Air Group’s post-acquisition strategy to turn Seattle into a major transpacific hub.
