Serious questions after Gatwick hand grenade discovery
Investigations are still ongoing after a man was discovered carrying a live hand grenade at Gatwick Airport.
A 37-year-old Venezuelan national was stopped by customs officers after he arrived on a British Airways flight from Bogota, Colombia. Reports say he has been arrested under the Terrorism Act after customs officers stopped him going through the green “nothing to declare” channel.
British Airways has launched its own investigation into how the man managed to smuggle the grenade on board, with particular attention being given to security measures at Caracas, Venezuela, where the man first checked in his luggage.
Most of the north terminal was cleared as soon as the discovery was made; it opened yesterday evening but anyone using the airport today may well find delays caused by the closure.
Meanwhile, four men were arrested under the Terrorism Act yesterday afternoon in the Berkshire village of Langley, just a few miles from Heathrow and directly under its flight path.
