Singapore Airlines’ Newark service to be world longest flight

Friday, 30 May, 2018 0

Singapore Airlines confirmed it will relaunch nonstop flights to the US east coast on October 11, and in doing so, regain the record of the world’s longest commercial flight.

Flights from the Lion City direct to Newark Liberty Airport will last  nearly 19 hours in the air, covering a distance of 16,700 kilometers.

The three times a week route is feasible again thanks to the ultra-long range version of the Airbus A350-900 which SIA takes delivery of from September as the launch customer.

It has seven on order and will receive all by the end of 2018.

The A350 features 67 Business Class and 94 Premium Economy Class seats.

SIA said it will continue running its one-stop Singapore-Frankfurt-New York service.

"The flights will offer our customers the fastest way to travel between the two cities in great comfort and will help boost connectivity to and through the Singapore hub," said SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong.

It becomes the only nonstop service linking Southeast Asia with the US east coast.

Changi Airport Group said the demand is certainly there, as it recorded nearly 700,000 passenger movements between Singapore Changi Airport and the US last year.

Singapore Air also said it will likely deploy a A350-900ULR on the Singapore-LA route in the near future.
