Six Flags announced deal for theme park in Saudi Arabia

Sunday, 21 Jun, 2016 0

Six Flags plans to bring its special brand of theme park excitement to a new untapped market – the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Following fruitful talks between Six Flags’ CEO James Reid-Anderson.and Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the company will open at least one park, although specific details are scant.

"We share Saudi Arabia’s vision to bringing entertainment to the country. We share the same vision with Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and are prepared to provide multiple options in a bid to translate that vision into reality," a Six Flags statement said.

Saudi Arabia will provide ‘land suitable for cultural and entertainment projects. Talented writers, authors and directors will be supported.’

It is unknown to what extent Six Flags will have to customize the theme park experience for the ultra conservative sensibilities of Saudi society where even public cinemas are banned.

Still, with oil revenues at a low, the Saudi government has been making a concerted effort to diversify and attract foreign investment with tourism an important part of its ‘Vision 2030’ strategy.

"We consider culture and entertainment indispensable to our quality of life. We are well aware that the cultural and entertainment opportunities currently available do not reflect the rising aspirations of our citizens and residents," the 2030 plan said earlier this year.
