Southwest Airlines to apply for federal aid
Southwest Airlines is joining American Airlines in seeking a share of federal aid.
It plans ‘to discuss the specific details regarding possible grants’ according to a regulatory filing.
It wants to boost liquidity and ensure staff job security.
Southwest hasn’t said how much in stimulus grants in is seeking.
American previously said it would like up to $12 billion.
"We still don’t know the severity of the situation. We don’t know how long it will last, so we intend to apply for our portion of the government grants," Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said in a video message.
The airline has separately secured $2.3 billion in loans.
The Trump Administration has made available $25 billion in grants for U.S. airlines.
The Treasury Department set a Friday deadline for airlines to apply.
Recipients of the federal grants may not furlough workers or cut any employment benefits for the next six months.
