Spirit Airlines next to update emotional support pet rules
Budget carrier Spirit Airlines has joined the growing list of airlines tightening rules for the carriage of emotional support animals.
The new policy takes effect from October 15 and requires 48 hours’ notice for each pet.
Spirit also requires pet owners to fill out two extra documents.
As well as the existing letter from a mental health practitioner, customers also need to produce a declaration form from a veterinarian and a liability form.
The latter makes the owner responsible for the ‘safety, well-being and conduct of this animal.’
The new rules are now posted on its website and Spirit warned customers that showing up on the departure day without advance notice won’t guarantee the animal will be accepted.
"If these forms are not submitted at least 48 hours prior to your flight, while we will do our best to review and approve them, we cannot guarantee travel with your animal,” the airline stated.
