State Department issues safety warning for Tijuana
The U.S. Department of State issued a travel warning for Americans on spring break trips to the border city of Tijuana and across Baja California. Travelers are asked to remain alert to increased crime and risk of kidnappings.
They are advised to ‘remain on main highways and avoid remote locations.’ There is a high number of homicides in the non-tourist areas of Tijuana, it says, and Americans have been victims of kidnappings.
Jorge Macías Jimenez, president of Tijuana’s Chamber of Commerce says he’s confident it won’t affect tourism.
