Stowaway cheats two airports’ security with old boarding passes
US airport security staff have come under scrutiny in the US after it emerged that a passenger had been allowed to sneak past officials for two flights without valid ID or a ticket.
Nigerian American Olajide Oluwaseun Noibi was able to board a Virgin America flight from New York JFK to Los Angeles LAX despite having an old boarding pass not in his name and just a college ID card.
Passengers on that flight alerted cabin crew to Noibi after complaining of his strong body odour. A crew member asked to see his boarding card and saw that it was for a different flight and in a different name from his ID.
She alerted aviation authorities but let him sleep for the remainder of the flight, judging him as no threat. On landing, he was not arrested and allowed to leave the airport.
Days later he again managed to pass undetected through security at LAX with an expired ticket not in his name. It was only at the gate for his Delta flight to Atlanta that he was arrested and found to have ten other old boarding cards with other people’s names in his possession.
Police officers dealing with the case said they believed Noibi was in the habit of sneaking onto planes without paying.
Questions are now being asked about the strength of US aviation security when a person who is found to be a stowaway is not arrested for five days after the discovery.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is in charge of airport security, is already in hot water after media reports recently revealed that its staff had forced a 95-year-old woman in a wheelchair to remove her adult nappy during a security check at Florida airport.
TSA officials say they are reviewing the Noibi case.
