Super-cyclone threat to South Pacific
Huge areas of the South Pacific ocean are today being battered by a “super-cyclone” that is threatening to devastate at least one travel destination.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cyclone Olaf hit Samoa today and is now heading towards the Cook Islands, which has already been hit by two large storms in recent weeks.
Cyclone Nancy is not far behind, and there are even fears that the two storms could combine – or at the very least, strike some areas in quick succession.
Several boats have been reported missing in the region, amid winds of up to 160 mph and waves up to 40 feet high.
The newspaper, quoting the Australian-Pacific Centre for Emergency and Disaster Information, says Olaf “poses a major threat to the Cook Islands”.
The “Cooks” narrowly avoided major damage two weeks ago when Cyclone Meena hit; it had been expected to cause major damage but the storm was not as devastating as had been originally predicted.
