Toddler injured after falling into Florida zoo’s rhino enclosure
A two-year old child was rushed to hospital after coming into contact with a rhinoceros at Brevard Zoo in Florida.
The youngster was participating in the zoo’s close-up experience with white rhinos when she fell between poles separating the animals and the public.
According to witnesses she came into contact with at least one rhino.
The child’s mother was also injured but was released from hospital.
The extent of the toddler’s injuries has not been disclosed.
"It has been a trying day for our family. We’re thankful to everyone who has reached out with their concerns. Our daughter is in good care at Arnold Palmer Hospital and is doing well," the girl’s father said.
The zoo has been offering the up-close rhino experience for nearly a decade and has never had an incident before.
"Our No. 1 concern is the safety and welfare of our guests, and our hearts go out to the family. Safety has always been of paramount importance to us," said Brevard Zoo’s executive director Keith Winsten.
The rhino encounters have been suspended until a full safety review is completed.
