Tour operators shunning high-cost Cuba
Canadian tour operators are increasingly halting trips to Cuba, citing its higher cost.
The tours are detouring to other Caribbean resorts, reported Reuters.
The Canadian Association of Tour Operators recently complained to the Cuban Ministry of Tourism about the lack of adequate service for tourists. The operators also complained about increased thefts at airports and hotels.
“Rates have become completely uncompetitive with other tourist destinations in the Caribbean,” the association said in a recent letter quoted by Reuters.
Tourist arrivals had been up just 1% early this year, according to the government.
Cuba draws more tourists from Canada than anywhere else, followed by Europeans. The US embargo and travel restrictions keep most Americans from visiting.
