Tourists stranded by Peru protests evacuated from Machu Picchu
Tourists stranded near Machu Picchu due to violent Peru protests have been airlifted by helicopter.
The tourists have been flown to Cusco, from where flights are now operating.
They had been stranded in a town at the base of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu for several days.
Peru’s tourism ministry confirmed they have been evacuated.
Protesters had forced the closure of the Cusco train service.
Peru protests began two weeks ago.
The US embassy warned ‘demonstrations can be unpredictable and quickly turn violent.’
Flights out of Lima are operating.
At least 20 people have died so far.
