Transatlantic flights cancelled as winter storm spreads south
Severe weather in the United States has caused further disruption to flights from the UK, with several services grounded today.
British Airways has cancelled a flight from Heathrow to Chicago this morning and Virgin Atantic’s service from Heathrow to Atlantic, due to depart at 12.50, has also been cancelled.
Several other flights to the US have also been disrupted and US airlines have been forced to ground at least 3,200 services due to freezing rain and snow across the Deep South.
Destinations from New Orleans to Virginia, which aren’t normally affected by cold, are experiencing freezing rain, snow and ice. Florida is also braced for snow.
Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee have been blasted by subzero temperatures for a second day and in Atlanta temperatures are expected to plunge to -9C.
Winter storm alerts have been issued by the National Weather Service stretching from central Texas through the Gulf Coast into Georgia, the Carolinas and far southeast Virginia.
Eastern and central Texas will endure the biggest snow threat in the south, while east North Carolina and southeast Virginia could get more than six inches of snow, The Weather Channel reported.
