A move towards low cost holidays is leading to an “unprecedented surge” in popularity for camping break this summer, a study claims.
Travel insurer LV= revealed that nearly twice as many people are considering a camping or caravanning holiday this year compared to 2008.
Research amongst campsites found that advance bookings are up 27% year on year.
The most popular spots include Cornwall (15% of people camping are planning to go there), the Lake District (12%) and Devon (11%).
Among all UK adults, one in three are planning or considering a camping or caravanning trip this year, with the majority citing cost as the primary motivator for choosing this kind of holiday, according to the research.
Campers plan to spend an average of £450 on their trip which equates to an estimated injection of £6.1 billion into the UK tourist industry.
The majority of people are going camping with their family (44%), although one in ten (8%) plan to travel alone, according to the online poll of 3,237 adults.
A spokeswoman for LV= travel insurance said: “Camping is a fantastic way to experience the great British countryside, and with a hot summer predicted it’s set to be a bumper year for camping and UK holidays in general.
“However, with camping sites full to bursting point unfortunately this could attract thieves who are looking for easy pickings."

2. Lake District
