UK teen drowns in Mauritius after dolphin swim
A UK teenager has died while swimming with dolphins off Mauritius.
Callum Howkinds, 17, from Hinkley in Leicestershire, failed to surface during a dive at Tamarin Bay and his body was recovered an hour later by the coastguard.
The tragedy happened on August 29. Callum was in Mauritius to attend his father’s wedding, at which he was best man.
Police say the skipper of the dive boat had been arrested and "provisionally" charged with involuntary homicide, but insist Callum had not been dragged down by the dolphins.
"The investigation is at a very early stage and we are not yet prepared to discuss details of the accident," said spokesman Darmarajen Mooroogan.
This year 13 people have drown in the waters surrounding Mauritius including the island’s tourism academy director Harmon Chellen, whose body was found just one week before Callum drowned.
