UK tourist shoots himself at Phuket shooting range
A British tourist staying on the Thai holiday island of Phuket has died in an apparent suicide after visiting a shooting range.
CCTV footage at Thalang Shooting Range showed the 21-year-old, later named as Liam Colven, from Portree, Isle of Skye, firing a pistol a target before reloading and turning the gun on himself.
According to staff and witnesses, Colven hired an 11mm pistol and fired seven shots at the target, before taking his own life.
He had been picked up from a Phuket resort earlier by a taxi driver who said he had just been arguing with a friend.
“I asked him where he wanted to go and he said ‘Take me somewhere I can shoot’, so I took him to the shooting range,” taxi driver Prasert Pasaman was quoted as saying.
Pasaman said the Scot had appeared ‘in good spirits’ with no outward signs of stress during the journey to the shooting range.
A British Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Thailand and are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
