Virgin Blue to consider Orange as new destination

Sunday, 08 Jun, 2007 0

Virgin Blue says it will consider including Orange on a regional tour searching for new routes, now the city has been opened up to competition.

The New South Wales Government will deregulate the Sydney to Orange route from next year due to a large increase in patronage.

Operations staff from the airline will visit Dubbo today to see if the local airport could handle new jets that carry between 70 and 110 passengers.

Amanda Bolger from Virgin Blue says Orange could also be considered as a new destination, adding, “It is something that we could potentially be interested in, given that we are looking at expanding around the country to more regional ports so, yes, it’s fair to say Orange could be on the radar”.

Dubbo’s airport and runway, check-in and baggage facilities, parking and security have also been inspected by the team as it seeks to establish new regional destinations.

Ms Bolger says the airline will add new planes to its fleet in September and today’s visit will confirm whether the jets could fly in and out of Dubbo from next year.

“The first step in the process is actually validating the information that we have on the actual physical airport, so that’s the first priority and then the next step is obviously looking at if we did go to Dubbo what particular routes we’d look at,” she said.
