Wales won’t rule out winter lockdown
The Wales government won’t make promises about avoiding a winter lockdown after acknowledging active Covid cases are ‘very, very high.’ Wales has the highest infection rate of the UK home nations.
It has stricter curbs than England with masks required for most indoor spaces and vaccine passports to enter nightclubs and large events.
Wales Health Minister Eluned Morgan said the situation is concerning with a further lockdown possible ‘if we see these rates continue at a very high level.’
Wales’ infection rate is 617 per 100,000 people over seven days.
Bed occupancy at NHS facilities in Wales is at a high.
"With winter pressures increasing, if it gets to the point where the NHS is unable to cope, action will need to be taken, which may include further restrictions being reintroduced," said Darren Hughes, director of the Welsh NHS Confederation
Wales ‘current status is ‘Covid Stable’ where no additional restrictions are likely but it has drawn up tentative plans for a next level ‘Covid Urgent’ scenario if the situation deteriorates.
