Walk Japan adds new guided Hokkaido itinerary

Wednesday, 18 Feb, 2026 0

Guided tour operator Walk Japan announced a new tour – East Hokkaido Trek.

Suitable for more experienced walkers, it follows sections of the Hokkaido East Trail, a recently established 410km (255 mile) hiking route via three national parks, from Kushiro’s wetlands via active volcanoes and crater lakes to the Shiretoko Peninsula.

Another of Walk Japan’s tours, the East Hokkaido Walk, visits the same region but follows easier trails for a more leisurely trekking experience.

The guided daily walks range from 11 to 18 km on a trail connecting three national parks with wetlands and crater lakes through lowland forests and farmsteads, to the Sea of Okhotsk.

It explores the Kushiro Shitsugen wetlands and Atosa-Nupuri (Io-zan), an active volcano.

It also visits Kawayu Onsen, Kussharo-ko and Masshu-ko, two of Japan’s largest crater lakes, and Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan’s last true wildernesses.

The fully guided 9 days, 8 nights tour has a maximum group size of 12 starting in Kushiro, and finishing in Memanbetsu.

The walking tour has departures in June, July, September and October.

Walk Japan, established in 1992, offers walking tours in many lesser-travelled regions of Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

Walk Japan has developed over fifty tours exploring Japan’s natural beauty, history, society and culture.
