Walsh “ready to wield the axe” at BA
Staff at British Airways are said to be “quaking” at the possibility of extensive job cuts as new chief executive Willie Walsh settles into his new job.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, Walsh is planning cost-cutting initiatives that will “make outgoing boss Rod Eddington’s hefty cuts pale into insignificance”.
Walsh, described by the newspaper as a “notorious cost-cutter” at his last job with Aer Lingus, reportedly wants to “take the axe to the 3,500 employees who work at BA’s opulent Waterside headquarters”.
While the newspaper offers no source for the story, it points out that the “news” comes just a day before BA announces its full-year results.
The carrier is expected to announce that it has had its highest fuel bill for more than a decade, due to the recent increases in the price of oil. BA’s share price dropped 1.5p to 246.5p yesterday.
