Where hotel rates have dropped the most

What’s the best city to take advantage of lower rates? San Diego, says Hotwire.com, which released a report featuring the top five cities in North America where rates have dropped the most.

“Once again San Diego takes the number one spot on the list where hotel rates have dropped the most. The city is still experiencing a decline in business and group travel, in addition to competition brought on by new, aggressively priced properties,” said the report.

Richmond, VA., is second with a 6 percent drop in rates that compares with San Diego’s rate (new rates are compared to a year ago).

Third is Omaha, followed by Fort Lauderdale and Las Vegas. Apart from San Diego, all properties offer 3.5 and 4-star hotels for under US$100.

The North American Hotel Rate Report also lists the top five cities where rates have increased the most.

Anchorage, Alaska, tops the list with a 40 percent increase as compared to last year.
“In August 2009, the area suffered from record low occupancy rates. But now, summer leisure travelers are returning to the area and prices are returning to levels last seen in 2008,” according to the report.

It is followed by Syracuse, Toronto, San Francisco and Seattle.

Hotwire.com is a leading discount travel site with low rates on airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, cruises and vacation packages. Launched in 2000, Hotwire negotiates deep discounts from its travel suppliers to help travelers book unsold airline seats, hotel rooms and rental cars.
