Wild flowers and walking bring in high-spending tourists
Remarkable success leads to thousand story European patchwork meadow
It is quite astonishing just how much mileage a destination can get from organizing a festival based on its natural assets.
Bohinj, in Slovenia is one example where its lovely wild flowers have been used to great effect in bringing tourists and stimulating the local economy.
The wild flower festival, now in its 7th year brings in tourists from all over the world for an astoundingly wide array of events. They include:
- A local craft market
- Folk dancing displays
- Embroidery with flower motifs
- Art exhibition
- Village singing concert
- Wildflower culinary evening
- And, of course much more
Now the project has been such a success that it has been extended to five other European countries and a patchwork meadow has been launched.
The wildflower meadow project aims to get 1,000 stories about 1,000 wildflowers to complete the meadow and create a community history archive. The archive will celebrate oral history, traditional agriculture and craftskills, wildflower folklore and community recipes with the participation of individuals and local communities.
And, from May 2013 tourists will be able to visit wildflower festivals at five sites across Europe and experience the beauty of plant rich natural landscapes and cultural events.
Country participants in the venture now include Scotland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Slovenia
