ABTA voices fear over APD
ABTA fears Air Passenger Duty, frozen in the Budget, could rise again if Labour is re-elected.
A spokeswoman said: “We are pleased that this is the case, although
concerned that this is part of the pre-election give-away, and that it will
be put up in the next budget if Labour are re-elected.”
ABTA says the proposed rise in travellers’ allowance from £145 to £1,000 is unlikely to happen quickly becasue it requires full EU backing as it is a European law.
The current limit for travellers bringing in goods to the UK from outside the EU (excluding wine, spirits, tobacco and perfume) is up to the value of £145 and the Government wants to raise that to £1,000.
But it requires unanimous agreement among EU member states in order to be changed.
Despite this the ABTA spokeswoman said: “We support the move as we believe that the £145 is out of date and unrealistic.”
